The CALIPSO project aims to drive innovation in high-power fuel cell technology for both stationary and mobility systems. The research and development activities aim to find solutions to current challenges that hinder the production of high-power stacks at competitive costs and with adequate performance. The project’s goals are ambitious: to develop innovative components and manufacturing processes that will push Italian technology and research beyond the current state of the art in their respective fields.
The participation of two manufacturing companies—currently the only ones in Italy to take on the challenge of producing components, stacks, and fuel cell modules—ensures strong interest in the industrialization of CALIPSO’s innovative products. This will enable the country to bridge the technological gap in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector, meet the goals set by European sustainability agendas, create new production chains, generate employment and economic growth, and, most importantly, fulfill the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The project is structured around two main development lines focused on the design of high-power stacks using polymer electrolyte technology and molten carbonate technology. Fundamental research aimed at visionary solutions will be balanced by industrial participation, enabling the development of innovative solutions that can be industrialized at low cost and within short timeframes.
