IEA Workshop on Hydrogen, 11 february, Paris

The International Energy Agency is hosting a high-level workshop on Hydrogen on Monday, 11 February 2019, in Paris, France, in order to prepare its work for the 2019 G20 Presidency of Japan.

Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier that can be produced from a wide range of energy sources and used in multiple applications across the entire energy sector. It is already an important part of energy systems, mainly for its use in the refining industry and as a feedstock for chemicals production. But its future potential is much larger and interest among governments and industry in the opportunities for supporting and investing in hydrogen is rising.

The International Energy Agency is preparing a major new study to assess the state of play for hydrogen, its economics and future potential. The analysis will cover the entire technology chain for hydrogen from production, transport and storage to its various uses. It will also discuss near-term opportunities for hydrogen deployment as well as practical steps for implementation. The report will be a key input to the 2019 G20 Presidency of Japan.

The workshop aims to convene a select group of key experts and decision-makers from all parts of the hydrogen value chain to give strategic direction to the report and beyond. Governments, potential hydrogen suppliers, equipment providers, transporters, users of hydrogen and its derivative products, financers and researchers will all be represented. The event will be opened by Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA; Dominique Ristori, Director-General Energy at the European Commission; and Ambassador Hiroshi Oe of Japan, Chair of the IEA Governing Board. We very much value your active participation in this event and hope that you will join us.

The workshop is informal in nature and held under the Chatham House Rule. Attendance is by invitation only.
